Dear Event Planner,
What do you want to accomplish with your entertainment? This may seem like an odd question, but selecting the right person for your event relies upon knowing what part of your event you expect the magician to perform. Not everyone is comfortable performing in all situations. Some are specialists in their particular style of magic. Let’s take a look at a few different styles of magic:
Table Magic - Just as it sounds, this is the most usual type of close up magic performed as a mini show for each table at a dinner function or restaurant. This is ideal for banquets, receptions, and award dinners.
Strolling Magic - Here the close up magician moves amongst your guests and performs for individuals and small groups of people as they stand and socialize at a cocktail party, promotional event or reception. This is perfect as an ice breaker and conversation starter.
Parlor Magic - This style dates back to Victorian times when the dinner host would stage a show for their guests in “the parlor” after dinner. This is recommended for small groups, usually under twenty people or so, with a performance for the entire group that lasts 20 to 30 minutes. This kind of magic should be arranged in advance as it often requires the close up magician to bring extra material not usually featured during a regular table magic or strolling performance.
Icebreaker Magic - Icebreakers are perfect for large groups of people, whether they are friends or complete strangers. Just place one icebreaker at each table setting and you are done. There's no work or worry. After reading the simple, yet easy to follow instructions, your guests will be able to amaze and astonish their table companions. What better way for your guests to introduce themselves to each other?
Promotional Magic - This is probably the most specialized type of close up magic. The magician needs to be able to qualify and bridge new leads to your sales force on an exhibition stand, or design and script a show to launch your new product. This kind of magic is a specialized field and typically seen at trade shows.
Close up magic is the most versatile form of interactive entertainment. Magic happens right under your guests’ noses and even in their hands! It is contemporary entertainment which evokes laughter and stimulates conversation, instead of drowning it out.
